On Saturday, 29 September, we took our first outing with the International Family Network from the University. It was a tour of Dunkeld and the Scottish Crannog Centre, both about 1.5 hours from Glasgow.
Dunkeld is a small picturesque town basically in the middle of nowhere. The town h

as nearly every building whitewashed, which made it look pretty neat. We arrived shortly before lunch and the boys were getting hungry. We decided to take a quick tour as the town is small and scout out the local eateries and the Cathedral (pictured, right). The Cathedral was absolutely beautiful from the outside. There was a wedding that day so we could not go inside. It sits right next to the river, so the boys enjoyed getting to run around a little after being on the bus for a long while. We stopped into a very small cafe on the main road and got bacon sandwiches. Now understand that "bacon" here is more like thin pork chops than what you get from Wendys. We didn't stay long, but it was a fun stop.
Then it was on to the Scottish Crannog Centre on Loch Tay. What's a Crannog you ask? Good question I respond

. Basically, it's a house that is built about 40 feet out in a lake with a bridge that goes to it. The unique thing is that archeologists have dug up some of these that date back 3500 or more years! It's pretty incredible to think about actually. There were some hands-on things to do here with a lot of old history, but mainly, you go out into the re-created Crannog (pictured, left) with the tour group. Loch Tay itself was beautiful and the scenery was incredible. To get here though, we drove through very narrow and windy roads which was quite a feat in a bus. I did get to see my first Scottish golf course on this trip...it was down in a valley as we drove by.
I'm sure we'll post more pictures of this journey somewhere. And I forgot to mention that we saw Stirling Castle and the William Wallace Memorial from the road...both are incredible...at least what we saw.
